I was driving up Minshull New road the other day and looked to my left at the housing estate, James Atkinson Way and wondered how long it had been built? It was of course built on the site of the old Rolls-Royce Sports ground, memories of times spent there came flooding back to me. Does any reader remember the Children's field days which were held ther many years ago, always on a Saturday in July. As a child I always looked forward to the Field day, being taken by my Mum and Dad (who worked at RR), to ride the attractions and play on the games organised by the comitee from RR. Later I was able to take my children and to my surprise most of the rides and games were the same! I can remember the following: Train ride around the steering circle, Chair o' planes, Magnetic fishing, Flying bubbles, Bowling, Smashing crockery and the races. I'm sure there were more but can't think of any at the moment. There was also the Cage bird show, flower show and other events organised for the day. Every year I took my children you would see the same faces on each of the attractions, always keen to help out.
If anyone reads this and it sparks memories then please let me know, also send me any items and I will publish them for all to read.

I do remember the sale of discounted boxes of Malteasers after the field day weekends. You had tickets for free ice cream, sweets etc for the kids, but there was always something spare to be sold on.
A family day out.
